News Cerro Negro de Mayasquer

The IGEPN geophysical institute in collaboration with the Pasto Volcanological and Seismological Observatory (OVSP) reported that a moderate seismic activity has been registered at the volcano complex and Potrerillos area.
A number of earthquakes have been felt on the borders with Colombia located about 9 km SE of the Cerro Negro volcanic complex during 12-14 June.
The Potrerillos zone corresponds to where quakes have been occurring since 2014. A series of large quakes have been detected since this year. This includes an earthquake on 20 October 2014 with magnitude M 5.7. Few quakes were recorded with magnitudes of 3 or more throughout the following years. Given the relationship between the volcano location and fault zones (El Ángel et al), a high likelihood of quakes is in place.
This has followed a pattern of gradually increasing inflation from 2014 until the end of 2020 which has changed to stable levels and this trend continues. The ground has been uplifted by 32 mm since April 2022 which is 4 mm more than the average uplift during the 2016-2022 period.
