A spectacular explosion at the volcano was being observed at about 08:10 local time (20:10 UTC) today.

The Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Tokyo detected an increasingly larger grey ash-rich plume that rose estimated 15,2 km altitude and drifted about 650 km to the E-SE direction. Given the height of the plume (12,3 km), the eruption may be considered sub-plinian which columns climb to around 10-20 km range.
According to the local observatory, the eruptive phase slowed down after 20 minutes associated with gradually decreasing ash emissions without exceeding more than 5-6 km above sea level.
Prior to the eruption, the activity of the volcano has been intensifying over the past week. The increased number of pyroclastic density currents and sustained ash emissions have been registered, resulting from unstable hot lava material accumulated in the lava dome.
