Ibu volcano (Halmahera, Indonesia): sudden large eruption today

A stronger-than-usual explosion occurred at the volcano at 16:46 local time today.

A spectacular grey ash plume was seen rising about 2,6 km above the crater towards the west.
The PVMBG volcano observatory reported a seismic signal with a maximum amplitude of 30 mm and a duration of 154 seconds.
The volcano produces occasional significant above-average eruptions. Such events are nothing unusual on the volcano and occur from time to time, but rarely more frequently than every few months or so.
