Vulcano volcano (Eolian Islands, Italy): unrest continues with very high gas emissions and ongoing ground deformation

The situation at the volcanThe situation at the volcano remains more or less unchanged. According to the latest status bulletin of the observatory (INGV Catania), most parameters of internal volcanic activity are at similar levels as during the past weeks, and continue to show that the volcano is restless.

Gas emissions, notably sulfur dioxide (SO2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are very elevated, the latter showing an increasing trend at most stations. Fumarole temperatures at and around the crater of La Fossa volcano remain similar as in the past week, with values of up to around 370 deg C.
Seismic activity on the contrary has decreased. Ground deformation continues to show increasing lateral expansion of a wider area and renewed uplift of the northern crater sector.

There is currently no indication an eruption is likely to occur right now, but the risk of sudden explosions and or renewed magmatic activity is clearly elevated and a very close eye is being kept at the volcano.o remains more or less unchanged.
