The inflation at the volcano continues.
InSAR (interferometric synthetic-aperture radar) monitorings of the volcano consider the central part of the caldera (western-southwestern outer part of the Viti crater) the most uplifted during the July 2021-August 2023 period.
A source of magma remains unchanged at 3 km depth, and according to geodetic measurements, there are no indications of magma reaching shallower levels.
Currently, the IMO scientists have been doing field research to measure gas, temperature and pH values located in the Öskjuvatn lake. These long-term measurements are taken to detect changes in the activity of the volcano.
Tourists are advised to keep attention to instructions issued by the Icelandic Civil Protection and the Police Department in the Northeast. In addition, people are recommended to avoid bathing in the Öskjuvatn lake and stay prolonged in the area as the volcano remains at the level of uncertainty.
