A geophysical approach for Ground Instability Phenomena_Avigliano(Southern Italy)

A geophysical approach, based on the integration of satellite dif-ferential interferometric SAR technique and in situ geoelectricaland seismic methods, was applied with the aim to characterize aportion of urban area of Avigliano (PZ) town in Basilicata Region(southern Italy) affected by ground instability phenomena.Satellite analysis helped to discriminate areas of the town affectedby superficial deformations and to monitor the dynamic behav-iour of the structures located in these areas. Results from geoelec-trical and seismic (active and passive) methods were comparedwith direct data (stratigraphic) and were interpreted with the aimto reconstruct the geometry of the subsoil. The joint applicationof both in situ techniques allowed the overcoming of the specificlimits of each method and to improve the poor quality of thedata due to the noise conditions typical of measurements carriedout in urban areas. A preliminary geophysical model of the sub-soil was obtained. The geophysical contrasts highlighted the pres-ence of lithological discontinuities due to the superficialdeformation processes that are affecting the portion of the inves-tigated urban area. All the information has been transferred tothe public administration technicians involved in the mitigation ofhydrogeological risk in Basilicata Region.
