Stromboli News

The volcano has been quite active recently, with an increase of explosions from its several active vents, clustered in the northern (N) and central-southern (CS) sectors of the current crater terrace.

In particular, the vents of the N2 sector (s. image) have been showing near-continuous lava spattering throughout the past days and weeks. Interestingly, there are also phases of strong intensification when the spattering starts to resemble weak lava fountaining producing near-continuous jets that reach up to a few tens of meters. Such phases can last up to a few hours and were seen and described by colleague Marc Szeglat both the day before yesterday and yesterday.
Unaffected by the spattering, the volcano's typical strombolian explosions continue, ejecting lava-rich jets to 50-100 m, and although mostly only moderate in size, their frequency is currently high and seems to increase. The activity can be followed in real time by Stromboli A Piedi's live stream cam.
Overall, the increasing tendency is also visible on the latest report about Stromboli volcano from Catania's INGV, which include the attached statistics of explosion numbers per hour for the whole of 2021.
On the other hand, tremor, gas emission and ground deformation do not indicate a particular increase of activity. Combined, the activity index created by the University of Florence's Geophysical Laboratory (LGS) remains therefore only at "medium" (at least for the time being):
In the last 24h, the Stromboli volcano activity is characterized by the explotions at NE and SW vents with LOW pressure and by MEDIUM degassing activity at NE vent. The number of explosions (thermal transients) is HIGH, with a LOW thermal amplitude and LOW exit velocity of pyroclasts. The volcanic tremor shows MEDIUM values. The number of VLP events is HIGH. Early SO2 flux measures from NE sector shows LOW level of degassing. The volcanic activity index based on multiparametric analysis is MEDIUM."
